Tigger Toy Ottoman

I was reading Better Homes and Gardens magazine and ran across an article that talked about making a pouf and how easy it is. Of course I had to make it 10 times more complicated and redesign it ten times. Mine is now round like the Pottery Barn one at the bottom of this page and I have added skill panels with pictures of Tigger.

Here is a link to the online directions from BHG.com...

While digging through my denim scraps, I found an old pair of denim shortalls that had Tigger playing baseball embroidered on them. It inspired me to add developmental skill panels to the sides of the denim ottoman I am working on. I thought It would be cute to have each panel reveal a picture of Tigger when opened.

I like the look of this bag, the way the stitch line is visible and the contrast of white background with the color of the bag.

football - snap
hockey - tie
golf - button
baseball - buckle
soccer - zip
basketball - lace

I like the stripe pattern on this Pottery Barn Ottoman. Since I am creating something similar with denim scraps I have had to work out some calculations for the pattern. Here is where I am at on that...

For a 20" diameter Ottoman with denim scraps seperated into D=dark blue, M=med blue, L=light blue

Stripes for the top are:
20" circle
D2.5", L2.0", M2.5", L1.5", D3.0", L1.5", M2.5", L2.0", D2.5"

I rearranged the colors a few times and was too lazy to fix the 1.5" strips so they are cut off a little in the pic.

For a 20" diameter circle we have to multiply by pi (3.14) to get the length of fabric we need for the sides. So, 20 x 3.14 = 62.8"

11.5"               L1.5, M2.0, L1.0, D2.5, L1.0, M2.0, L1.5
20"       (D2.5, L2.0, M2.5, L1.5, D3.0, L1.5, M2.5, L2.0, D2.5)
11.5"               L1.5, M2.0, L1.0, D2.5, L1.0, M2.0, L1.5
20"       (D2.5, L2.0, M2.5, L1.5, D3.0, L1.5, M2.5, L2.0, D2.5)
______
63"

I am going to cut these all at 17" because I want a 16" high ottoman and am leaving a 1/2 " seam allowance.

(8) 1.5" x 17" Light Blue
(4) 2.0" x 17" Med Blue
(4) 1.0" x 17" Light Blue
(6) 2.5" x 17" Dark Blue
(4) 2.0" x 17" Light Blue
(4) 2.5" x 17" Med Blue
(2) 3.0" x 17" Dark Blue

For the skill panels I am going to divide the 63" by 5. So 63" divided by 5 = 12.6"

So each of the 5 sections will be 12.5" wide x 16" high.  I want a 2" border around each panel so the panels themselves will be 10.5" w x 12" h when completed.

Print out Tigger panels on white cotton fabric. (see post for Homemade BubbleJet Set ) and sew together with denim scraps. Press seams down flat.

Create the developmental skills flaps. Line the back with a lighter weight cotton fabric. Use Gromets, Zipper, Buttons etc. Sew bias tape to top and bottom (sides B and D ) for each side.

Sew Left side A to the left side of the Tigger panel both pieces right side up. Sew right side C to the right side of the Tigger Panel.

Sew bias tape around entire panel and attach to ottoman. Yup, that sounds easy enough.

Update

07/28/2012: Cutting these jeans into useable fabric is taking forever and I don't like it : P Blah.

08/11/2012: I finally have this all cut into strips. It took 4 pairs of large jeans and the next step is pressing. I like to iron my seams for stripes because I find it helps make them straight.
